SUPIMA IN THE NEWS: Sportswear International

NEW YORK—Gina DeSilva’s winning collection in Supima’s third Design Competition has been making headlines galore.

Writing earlier this week in Sportswear International, editor Tim Yap had this to say:

Newcomer designer Gina DeSilva took home the third annual Supima Design Competition award for best eveningwear last night.

Held at the New York Times building in Midtown, this year’s contest saw six young designers, with four exits each, compete for the eveningwear prize as well as a prize for the best T-shirt design using Supima cotton. The competition requires designers to rethink familiar fabric constructions such as high-end shirting, fine jersey and sturdy denims.

DeSilva’s winning pieces included complex yet sensual constructions such as a hand-dyed and shredded Sanko and Pagmat jersey gown with a shredded neckline and godet and a one-shoulder, trumpet-skirt gown with a peplum waist in fine-wale corduroy.

Meanwhile, Robin Thomas won the T-shirt category with a triple-layered, V-neck T-shirt made from Majestic jersey.

Other finalists of the evening included Sachika, Michael Venker, Nadia Ivanova and Heber Sanchez.

Judges this year included the Times’s Horacio Silva, journalist Teri Agins, fashion director Chris Frye from Bloomingdale’s, and Parsons Dean Simon Collins.
