SUPIMA IN THE NEWS: Runway coverage in Fashion Week Daily
By CeCe Shelburne
NEW YORK — Supima’s inaugural Design Contest for Emerging Talent, which culminated in a live runway show held here at Gotham hall last Tuesday, continues to makes waves in the New York fashion world.
In Anne Shaughnessy’s lead story in this morning’s edition of Fashion Week Daily, headlined “Super Supima,” here’s what she had to say about the show:
On Tuesday, July 15, Gotham Hall was filled with the sounds of chic music and excited voices of fashion personnel as they anxiously awaited the start of the premiere Inaugural Supima Fashion Show for Fall/Winter 2009-2010. The show consisted of pieces crafted by twenty-five talented designers who were handpicked by a panel of judges on June 17th at the Thompson Hotel. Judges included Ellianna Placas, Fashion Director of Life & Style, renowned fashion stylist, Samara D’Auria, Project Runway designer, Kevin Christiana and VP of Marketing for Supima, Buxton Midyette. At 8 p.m., all in attendance took a seat with their Three Olives cocktails in hand, of course. As the lights dimmed down, the attention of 300 onlookers was turned to the simple white runway adorned with cotton plant branches.
The sketches and visions of these designers came to life as the models strutted down the runway in a myriad of Supima fabric. The designers showcased at this event were Erna Leon, Katya Leonovich, Woomi Pyo, Aira, Form, Casey Pyle, Satsi, Astrid Brucker, Holly Beedle, Yelena Alpin, Antonia Ortega, Karen Sabag, Esther Siegel, Anne Pachan, Albert Lopez, Shannon Glasheen, Brigette Schwenner, Ronit Genik, Carolina Figueroa, Jose Miguel Valdivia, Erna Leon, Christopher McCardell, Astrid Brucker, Wilbur Pack, Riza Manalo and Sergio Guadarrama. Editors, buyers, retailers, and other industry heavyweights applauded loudly with great enthusiasm as each new and different piece entered onto the white stretch. Although all fabric used by the designers was supplied by Supima, the fabric used was very versatile per each designers sketch. The finished products of the designers reflected nothing short of original thought, modern vision, and craftsmanship at its finest.
At the close of the show, judges selected five designers as award recipients, these five being Erna Leon for the Best Luxury Denim Award, Brigitte Schwenner for Supima’s Softness Award for Outstanding Knit Design, Jose Miguel Valdivia for Best Technical Execution, Sergio Guadarrama for the Super Fine Shirting Award and Form for the Overall Design Winner. “We are truly impressed with the wonderful turnout and unbelievable designs that went down the runway at Supima’s first ever fashion show,” Midyette noted. He then went on to share that, “It is such a pleasure to be able to encourage emerging talent in the very spirited arena of fashion and in such a stylized, elegant program. Supima has always created fashion-forward projects to gain added exposure among industry leaders and this is just another way of us extending our efforts and giving back to the creative community.” We hope to see our favorite celebrities donning these stylish threads very soon!
