SUPIMA IN THE BLOGOSPHERE: NY Post’s “Cotton Cotton Everywhere!”

NEW YORK — The fashion show that capped Supima’s inaugural Design Contest for Emerging Talent on Tuesday evening in Gotham Hall continues to win kudos in the fashion blogosphere.

Here, in a story headlined “Cotton Cotton Everywhere!” with a video of the show, is what the fashion blog of The New York Post had to say:

Last night, a cotton boll-lined runway was home to one-of-a-kind pieces from 25 up and coming designers. Supima Cotton hosted their Inaugural Edition Show, which was developed as an opportunity for their luxury fabric name to get more exposure.

Supima’s VP of Marketing, Buxton Midyette, explained that the inspiration to create the show came from the understanding that we consumers don’t comprehend a fabric unless it’s in finished, clothing, form. So, they saw the runway show as a way to encourage emerging talent in a creative way for the public to see. Each of the contestants were chosen by a panel of judges, including Project Runway Season 4 contestant Kevin Christiana, last month at an open call at the Thompson Hotel.

I spoke with two of the chosen ones who were in agreement that this opportunity to create for Supima meant the world to them. Erna Leon, a designer originally trained in the fine arts, was given denim as her Supima fabric. It was a medium she hadn’t worked with before, but it was no beginners luck when Leon took home Best in Class for Luxury Denim (in lieu of flowers the four winners were handed bouquets of cotton branches!). Her two denim dresses were gorgeous, intricate, and something I would totally wear!

Another great sight to see at the show was three former PR contestants! Out supporting fellow new designers, were Kevin, Jack, and Victoria from Season 4. Backstage, the boys were excited to take a look at the clothes and jealous of the four weeks the Supima contestants got to create their garments, as opposed to the PR one day challenges!

It was an exciting night for the designers and Supima, as their first show flowed seamlessly. My congrats to all 25 designers, hopefully we’ll see you on the racks soon!
