MEET THE DESIGNER: Victor de Souza

By Greg Wang

NEW YORK—Last month, when it was time to decide whose entry would open the denim segment of the runway show in Supima’s second Competition for Emerging Designers, the show’s producers were unanimous: Victor de Souza’s dramatic strapless evening look with its tented, trained skirt made from thick, beige Kaihara denim led the category.

Later, when the show was over, it was also Victor who took home the award for best design in the denim category—for that very same entry.

But that wasn’t his only runway success: He also created, for the shirting category, a chic, pagoda-shoulder cocktail dress in Tai Yuen shirting with a satin finish.

“That level of execution and design is what made the runway judging take ten times longer than we’d anticipated,” recalls one of the judges.

Born in Argentina, trained in France, and now based in Brooklyn, the 40-year-old designer has shown on the Gen Art runway and has dressed celebrities ranging from Alicia Keyes to Mary J. Blige and his work has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Elle.
