MEET THE DESIGNER: Connie Weng
By CeCe Shelburne
A native of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, 22-year-old Connie Weng graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design earlier this year with a BFA in Apparel Design and aspirations to launch a career in sportswear.
To date, her honors have included being named last year’s YMA Fashion Fund Scholar and four years as recipient of the Sanofi-Aventis Scholarship.
Describing her aesthetic, she says, “my work is not about fashion as much as it is about lifestyle.” In her Competition collection, “I have been working with digital prints and have used a riot of colors that I probably would have been hesitant to use in my sportswear. It has been pushing me out of my comfort zone.”
At RISD, her faculty mentor for the Supima Design Competition was Meg DeCubellis.
See her capsule collection at 1 p.m. on September 8, when she shows as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Lincoln Center.
