FROM THE ARCHIVES: Riding high with Supima

PHOENIX—Did you know that, during the 1920s, Supima was sought out as a material for automobile tires?
It’s true.
Since no one had seen the likes of cotton so lightweight and strong, the Ohio-based Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company purchased several thousand acres of land in the Salt River Valley to assure its supply of Pima Cotton for automobile tires.
